Some excursion details:
Herculaneum already greatly destroyed in the 62 earthquake, was once again destroyed by the eruption of the Vesuvius in 79 AD. Covered by an enormous quantity of mud, ashes and other volcanic matter washed down by rainwater, that penetrating every opening, solidified into a compact layer of 15-20 meters.
It’s a location of marvels: mosaics and paintings, sculptures by Greek and Roman maestros. Documents and testimonials of the life during that epoch reside at the National Archaeological Museum today.
